Dr. Janice K. JacksonChief Education Officer

I want to thank everyone who came to the Board meeting today to express your concerns about funding for Diverse Learners. We take our students’ needs very seriously, and CPS is committed to meeting the Individualized Education Program requirements of every diverse learner in the district.

IEPs are written plan for every child with a disability and they are developed, reviewed, and revised in a meeting in accordance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act regulations.

For those of you who couldn’t join us at the Board meeting today, I want to share what I told the Board and the members of the public who could attend. If you feel that a student needs additional support to meet IEP requirements, please contact us directly and immediately with specifics.

To share that information, call the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services at 773-553-1800 or email chiefofodl@cps.edu.

Please know that over the next month, we particularly want principals to have every opportunity to express any concerns that they have over staffing. We have extended the date that they can appeal staffing decisions for special needs students, and we will work with every principal in the district to review their funding allocations as part of that process. The new appeal date is Nov. 2.

Following students’ IEPs – to the letter – is the key to ensuring that all appropriate resources are in place for our Diverse Learners. That’s why we’re conducting a full review, with an appeals process for principals.

Thank you for working with CPS, and I look forward to hearing from you.
