Before an elated Bronzeville crowd, the Wildcats of Wendell Phillips High School brought CPS its first-ever State football title on the day after Thanksgiving. The team crushed opponent Belleville Althoff by a score of 51-7 at NIU’s Huskie Stadium.
This neighborhood school has been on the rise: over the last five years attendance, test scores and college enrollment are all up, and Phillips’ students are fielding millions in scholarship offers.
At a rally celebrating their state football championship, Phillips was congratulated this week by students, teachers, alumni, and officials from around the city, including CPS CEO Forrest Claypool and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
