If you’re a high school senior at CPS, you’ve probably heard of the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program.
For seven of the past eight years, Chicago has boasted more Gates Millennium Scholars than any school district in the country. The credit goes to our students, but also to the counselors and post-secondary coaches who believe in their potential and refuse to let finances get in the way of their students’ dreams.
We talk about Gates at our family scholarship sessions. We host writing workshops based on the demands of the application, and bring back former Gates Scholars to give our current students tips about the process.
It’s all part of our strategy to get more CPS students to college, and it’s paid off.
For two consecutive years, these professionals have helped 35 CPS students earn Gates scholarships – need-based financial support that allows students to pursue any field of study at the accredited college of their choice. Our counselors have targeted the students who they knew were strong candidates for this award, then helped guide them through the rigorous application process, standing over their shoulders to make sure that essays were well written and deadlines were met.
